Classical acupuncture theory

For thousands of years, acupuncture theory and therapy evolved in China and beyond. Its focus is often described as correcting blocked, deficient, excessive, or disordered Qi. Ronald describes Qi in practical terms as physiological function and the bioelectrical activity that animates living things.

In this framework, the body and its organs circulate Qi and Blood through pathways commonly called meridians or channels. When these factors are balanced and moving normally, there is health. When there is deficiency, excess, blockage, or another disruption, dysfunction may follow. The acupuncturist studies the body's signs and symptoms, identifies the pattern, and selects points intended to restore healthier function.

A modern physiological perspective

Ronald also explains acupuncture through communication among the nervous, circulatory, lymphatic, endocrine, and immune systems. In an area of pain or dysfunction, signaling and circulation may be dysregulated. Needling creates sensory input that travels through the nervous system and may influence local tissue response, pain processing, circulation, and broader regulatory activity.

This does not mean acupuncture replaces diagnostic testing or medical treatment. It is a complementary approach that may help the body regulate and respond more effectively, depending on the person and condition.

Specialized point strategies

Beyond general effects, acupuncture traditions assign particular functions to specific point combinations. Ronald selects points according to the patient's whole pattern rather than treating every person with the same formula. The treatment strategy may be described classically as warming what is cold, cooling what is excessive, moving what is stuck, consolidating what is scattered, nourishing what is depleted, or draining what has accumulated.

Trigger points and myofascial release

Fascia surrounds muscles and muscle fibers and can become tight, knotted, or guarded after injury, repetitive strain, stress, or other health disturbances. Trigger points can refer pain away from the original tight area. Acupuncture and dry-needling-style techniques may be used to release contracted fibers, improve movement, and support circulation through affected tissues.

Biochemical and nervous-system effects

Research has explored acupuncture's relationship to endogenous pain-modulating chemicals, neurotransmitters, connective tissue, local blood flow, and central nervous-system responses. The evidence and strength of conclusions vary by condition and study design. Ronald's clinical approach uses this modern perspective alongside classical assessment rather than presenting one mechanism as the only explanation.
